Is there any reason why me and my wife can file joint for federal and seperate for state? The reason i ask is that state i need to do seperate as my company will reimburse me for state as the state i worked is not the state I or my comapny resides.... Can i file seperate state and file joint federal? is there any reason i shouldnt do this? My wife also has to fiel returns in the state also as she came up with me on temporary assignment and had a job while we were there.

This is a question for your state(s) of residence.
If I'm reading your post correctly, you had income in two different states during the year. Is this correct? If so, which states?
Also - most tax-filing software will develop a spreadsheet to display the portion of tax and income attributable to each partner, in order to display this for purposes such as yours - or for court arrangements and the like. Check in to that, before you over-complicate things with multiple filing statuses.

two different states one is Texas (my residence) so i don't file as no taxes taken out the other is PA .....

Hello
this looks to be a situation not so easy to solve .. U need more than just an Opinion u need someone Guiding u by ur hand and this would be done better for someone in a DESK honest and reliable ABLE to Train u a litle in ur SITUATION for the future to COME!!
So go and look some DESK help.. obviously keep us informed we ll keep trying to help..
PS: Ur wife would agreee with ME LOL
