WordPress is to attend or volunteer at a WordCamp,which are chargeless or bargain events that happen all around the world to gather and educate WordPress users, organized by WordPress users. Check out the website, there might be a WordCamp near you.

Wordpress can be made very secure. As secure as regular web sites, if not more. Most web developers don't know enough about it or technical issues to lock it down though. I started out in the security and IT end of the biz. I am very impressed with Wordpress. They work very quickly to update with security features. If you lack the money for a web host and that is hanging you up with launching a WP site off of wordpress.com, I found a place that offers a free web site with no ads except those you put on it. They even include some free tech support. Rare! Their servers are in Germany, but they are on a fast internet backbone, so you shouldn't have any speed issues. Their link is on my site. Haven't tried them myself because I have a host relationship already. Haven't heard anything bad about them yet.
