Hello everyone,
I've been searching for a place where I could have my life up to this point critiqued and I thought I would start here. I am in no way, shape or form bragging about anything and I hope you all do not construe this as such, but here goes.
I am a 27 year old male with a bachelors in political science and a minor in history. My current job, which I've been at for 4.5 years is in no way related to either of my degrees, and is what most would consider dead-end. I now make $22.04/hour, with 3-4 hours of overtime a week. My employer contributed 4.5% to my 401k, which is now worth $17403. I have a roth IRA, which is worth $25,900. I have 5k in a money market account earning piddly interest. I have 25k in an online savings account earning 2.15% (smartypig) and ~2k in checking and savings.
I live with my girlfriend who is a home owner and pay her rent of ~900 a month including utilities. I have no car payment, but my car is aging and is too small for me so purchasing a new one is in the back of my mind. I also plan on purchasing a house once the market bottoms out or I find one I like that I can afford. I'm planning on finding a new job in the next year or so, and I'm really wondering if I would be better off quitting my current job and focusing 100% of my time on finding a new job. To be honest I hate going to work every day, and ever since I lost my dad 4 months ago I realized that life is too short to spend 1/3 of your day, everyday, being somewhere you are miserable. This post is more to vent, but I would like to get everyones thoughts on where I am in my life right now.

Lots of jobs (most jobs?) have periods where you will hate them - maybe that's why it is called 'work'. At any rate, if you decide to change jobs, always find the new job before you quit the old job, that way you won't be in a self-created time constraint. (the confidence that you display at interviews comes thru, just as the desparation of joblessness comes thru.) But a lot of your feelings are tied to your recent loss - 4 months is a very short time to regain your poise and stability - you'll be way stronger next year, you'll never forget (nor do you want to) but you'll build and accomodate.
A net worth of $75,000 is very solid at age 27. About the new car - modern cars reliably serve for 200,000 miles (we've done that since 1970). If you avoid the depreciation costs of a pair of cars for about 30 yrs you will see why millionaires often drive older cars.

No.
And a good point in oldguy's post about feeling down now. And I'm sorry for your loss. But don't make crucial decisions while your outlook is clouded. There's no shame in doing some grief counseling, either.
Keep doing your best in whatever job you find yourself and one day you WILL find yourself in the right job.
Best wishes and good luck.

It sounds like you are doing good. For 27 years old especially. You sound knowledgable about money matters. I think you probably miss you dad alot and wish you could ask for his advice. I think you should pray to the lord more. God Bless you

You are doing very well for yourself for your age. If you are that unhappy with you job look for another one while you are still working at your current place. Once you lock something in then go for it. You dont sound like your spending money friviously which is good. Find a job that you would enjoy and go for it. Once your income rises some more keep your spendings the same. You are building for retirement quickly and if you could increase your income and raise your investment accounts that would be awesome. Make sure you diversify your investment accounts too. My portfolio that I am building is being build as such. 25% - Real Estate, 25% - Business, 15 % Comodities, 15% Oil and Gas, 10% Stock, and 10% Cash Reserve. I put more in high risk cause I can afford the risk to loose money because of my age. As you get older and closer to retirement you need to be more conservative.
GOOD JOB!

Prime Debt Services is the 1% that offers Attorney Representation if you are sued and is an actual Law Firm.

Wait a little while, maybe three months, and then take stock of you job situation right now. You wouldn't want to make an emotional decision that may not help with where you are.
Also, I would advise you to never quit a job without already having interviews lined up. Even if you have a pretty substantial emergency fund. There's no reason to risk dipping into your savings/investing account unnecessarily.

Could be that you are feeling the success at the moment that it blinded you and makes you feel unhappy? It was just a thought. Sometimes people tend to miss the tiniest thought of appreciating something good.

Why not keep your current job and make another fulltime job out of looking and networking to find a new job. Not sure why you need to quit to find another job.

kind of funny coming back and reading this. just thought i'd post an update in case anyone is interested.
two days after that post, i was involved in a car accident. i got a check for what my car was worth, and purchased my late fathers car from my mother, which so far has been great.
i also got some additional responsibilities at work and got a raise to $25/hr. Overtime was cut this past july, and now company wide lay-offs are looming. Looks like im back where i started lol. Onwards and upwards i guess.
