Adsense is the primary way, unless you also have some kind of service you can offer.

You can also put Amazon, eBay, and other income modules into your website that can generate you income. If a product compliments your website content it can be a great income stream.

Or you can host a directory web site and do link building.

You'll see all over the internet that "Content is king". if you've got a knack for writing, then start blogging about something you're passionate about. Tweet it, facebook it, digg it, expose your content. Add GoogleAds to your website and voila! Each time someone visits your site you'll earn money. The more visitors you have, the more money you make.
That is probably the most simple way to make money using a website. Of course, how much you make depends on how many visitors you have. Some bloggers have such a huge following that they make enough money via advertising and GoogleAds to quit their day job.

Why do you say Adsense is "hard to get in"? I had Adsense on one of my sites for a couple years, and all I had to do was register the url and have it validated. The ads were active within minutes.
I have problems with Adbrite's advertising delivery methods and model.
Not familiar with the others.

Website owners make money by placing ads around their content. It can be ads from adsense or affiliate companies like neverblueads, maxbounty and commissionjunction. You'll just have to sign up for a few of them, test out different ads and stick to the ones that make the most money.

Adsense has a bunch of requirements that other networks do not. Here are some:
- Domain has to be older than 6 months
- Site has to have a well defined menu and ease of access
Adbrite and Bidvertiser on the other hand, could care less about what your website looks like.

Really? They must have tightened up their requirements since I signed up. I've had the ads off for a couple months; I wonder what would happen if I put them back on?

Nothing... once you get your account you're safe
They rarely screen unless you click on your own ads or the CTR is suspiciously high (>4%) in which cause they will delete you...

Try Chitika Premium Ads. They are search customized and also content specific.

This is true, but I wanted to add that it's not quite that simple. Your ad placement and content subject will affect your click thru rate...so even if you have a good number of visitors a day, if the ads are in a bad location and the subject matter doesnt' really encourage visitors to want to click on ads for more info or to buy a product...well then your click through rate will be horrible and you worked for all those visitors for nothing
