| Are social sec benefits taxable? |
|
|
Unbelievably naive question, of course, and asked/answered already a zillion times, I'm sure, but I fergit!
If I start taking full retirement benefits next February, when I'm first eligible, and I stop earning any earned income, are the benefits taxable for federal income tax purposes?
Same question, if I keep earning earned income but I stay below whatever threshold SSA imposes on how much earned income I can have.
Thx.

For Federal income tax, you're taxed on your Social Security Benefits on a sliding-scale basis when your other income exceeds a certain amount. Don't remember for sure. I think it's in the neighborhood of $25K. But just plug in that same question on the IRS web site. It's incredible, but they've actually got a fairly decent search function there and vast amounts of information that pops out when you ask.

The government is pretty good at that, isn't it? If people only knew how much they're actually paying in taxes...........

It depends on your total income and in some cases up to 85% of SS can be taxable

It varies from government and you are never sure if you are asked to pay tax for a particular thing or not.
