Blogs are easy, there are several places out there that will host your blog for you blogspot is the one I use.

How much do you know about websites? If nothing at all I would suggest using a program such as Frontpage or Dreamweaver for your first site. Once you get familiar with html code then use notepad and write your own code. I started on notepad because I had no idea things like Frontpage existed, it's much more open ended and you have a lot more control. Besides, you'd be surprised with the designs you come up with when you don't have to follow a template.

I suggest buy your own domain like kenblog.com (about $2 in Yahoo or GoDaddy) and get your own host (maybe like $20 a year) then use wordpress for your blog.

Look at http://W3Schools.com for some excellent tutorials on learning to make a website with nothing but Notepad. Then look at http://DIYKISS.com for how to use free templates to put your new HTML knowledge to use, without starting from scratch.

www.sitepoint.com is another excellent site with lots of articles

I hate to argue with you, but at least in my opinion out of all those things you mentioned the only one you need to build a very adequate marketing website that pulls in orders is HTML.

You can download free templates with the CSS already done.

PHP is only necessary if you need an interactive site and even then scripts can be obtained that all you do is copy them to your web server and follow some simple instructions to set them up.

Same with Javascript, most things can be done with recipes you cut and paste.

Leave Apache up to your hosting service.

Just my opinion formed after 8 years doing websites.

www.websitepublisher.net is also a great site for help with building a website. I do like sitepoint but it's become almost too big for me in the last couple years. I enjoy a smaller forum, it seems more personal and your post doesn't get buried in 5 minutes by other new posts.

One can build a great site with html and a little php (it makes it much easier to update a navigation bar on every page without editing each page individually). I agree with both No-Brainer and coaster in this sense though. Yes, you can build a great site with html and find almost any css or php code you need online but it is also good to learn the code yourself. However, it is not a good idea to learn all the code languages at the same time, definately start with html and expand from there when you feel comfortable. I really enjoy coding in notepad and it can be rewarding but it can also be discouraging if you try to tackle too much at once.

Yes you can, but experience has taught me that it's better to have someone make something from your hosting, even if it's only $1 a month. That gives you better support when others depend on your business for their income. If it's free there is no incentive.

I agree, plus when a site is hosted with a free host and the domain name is peppered with a bunch of extra words, it just doesn't look as appealing.

That's easy to fix, get a .info domain name from GoDaddy on sale for 99 cents a year and redirect it to your free website with masking. Then anyone will see your domain in the browser address but be on the free website.

The real reason not to use free hosting is there is too much risk of losing all your effort since they are not committed to supporting you and it only saves you a buck a month. If you're doing it as a business, what's a buck?

Could be, but I couldn't care less. I have much easier ways to get traffic that counts than depending on Google.

If I was seriously concerned with SEO I would use a full domain anyway.
