This isn't exactly "for profit" but I might be setting up a message board for a local radio talk show and I wanted to get some opinions on the best free message board service to use. (vBulletin isn't free, so I won't be using that.) I've got experience with Invision and phpBB as both a user and a moderator, but I've never set up a board, nor dealt with a board hosting service. I prefer the Invision software, but it looks like InvisionFree is in the midst of a transfer to new software, so the timing might not be too good. Any recommendations? Pros and cons? Features I should look for? Questions I should ask? Thanks......

Thanks. I'm playing around with phpBB3 now on a free host and I think it's what I want to go with.

I don't really know too much about the different types of board software, but many web hosting companies now offer in their control panels the ability to auto-install a blog or message board.
Maybe you should just buy a domain and do that. I do this with all my blogs and have them installed in a couple of minutes through the control panel in my web host.

Hah hah .... much has happened since I asked this question. I do have a hosting service and a domain (three actually) and I'm building my own custom style over the phpBB3 shell. It's been an interesting and challenging trip, having to learn both CSS and HTML simultaneously. But when it's ready to go, it's MINE. For better or for worse.

Huh?? phpBB3 IS the platform forumotion uses for their free boards. My demo board was on forumotion. BTW, I removed the url because it's no longer there. This is a pretty old thread.

if you doonot want VB, then either phpBB3 or simple machine forum (SMF). I will recommend SMF. they are all free.

vBulletin though not free is probably the best option for a forum IMO, espectially one for a business. It's kind of like free vs. paid hosting. They can pay now, or pay later when they discover they don't have the types of controls they need to manage such a forum properly should it take off.

Never been too keen on vBulletin, but it does have some cool features. One problem with vBulletin is it automatically subscribes you to every thread you post in and if you're a newbie to forums you'll possibly be spending hours trying to work out a. why you've got all these email notifications and b. how to turn the damn things off.

That may have been changed. I've got notifications enabled on one of my vB boards with the latest (and last) v3.x version and I get one notification per subscribed thread until I revisit the thread (same as phpBB)
