People make good money on domains but you need to have good domain names. However if you can cut yourself into a deal as a broker for a premium domain you can get yourself a nice chunk.

You can also flip domains on eBay for quick easy cash. You can buy a bunch of generic domains for $8 and easily flip them from anywhere from $40 to $500 and you don't have to develop them.

You can also park domains but you won't make that much unless you have a lot of type-in traffic or existing traffic from an old website. It is better to make your own custom parking page. It will pay out better with Adsense and other affiliate ofers like CPA.

Some people also put together really quick mini-sites with free or paid website templates and flip them for quick cash on eBay.

Hell, even if it's not your main line of business everyone should buy a couple at least. God knows what they'll be worth a couple of years down the line. Take www.bingo.com for example... cost the gentleman $10 and sold it for millions.

I think it depends on the market that you buy the domain in. Also if you develop it then it makes it even more valuable.

This is my personal idea that working on domains and making them successful websites could be more profitable in the long terms. Besides the buyers of even very great domains would prefer purchasing them only if they are attached to some established websites.

Domaining requires quite a bit of capital if you want to scale the business. You can figure buying 1000 domains will run you about $10,000 (if they are .com, .net, .org type domains). And out of every 1000 you might sell 2-3 for a few hundred to a couple of thousand bucks unless you've just really lucked into some really awesome domains. The others you can park and hope you get some direct type in traffic and adsense type click-thrus.

Tough business...

I agree this could be hard to make good money.

How ever if you buy a domain name then getting it to earn some money then you can make a good profit.

Such as buying a domain and having it earn 5-10 within 2-3 months. total cost might be $50 put into it. but then you can sell it for 100-400 depending on the buyer.

domain itself does not sell good unless you have a really good domain, which is really difficult to find now. but, as others said, build your site, and get some earnings steadly, then you can sell it with a much higher price.
