My business would not ship any actual product. It is a service business. People would purchase a membership and have access to my services. So, what are the sales tax laws for that type of online business?

Sales tax laws are a state-by-state issue. Technically speaking, if you have a "presence" (good luck getting a court to pin that down) in any state that has a sales tax that you're supposed to collect sales taxes as appropriate to that state's laws and send them to that state. Practically speaking, unless you're a big online seller (like Dell, for example) I wouldn't worry about it. It wouldn't be right for me to advise you to disregard other state's laws. But, like I said, I wouldn't worry about it. Read between the lines.

You should also get registered with the states taxation authority(get a tax ID number) and learn your filing requirements. Keep good records and possiblly you can claim a home office and computer. This advice was prepared based on our understanding of the tax law in effect at the time it was written as it applies to the facts that you provided.

Many consumers enjoy shopping at online retailers, and those who complete transactions may note the absence of sales tax for some purchases. For one you will need to find a reliable supplier who will be your partner in delivering quality products to your customers. Some large online retailers have gone so far as to establish separate legal entities to spare their customers having to pay sales tax.
