"Bricked" Roadster owner problem, claims Tesla  Reply with quote

Tesla Motors is trying to deflect claims made by a blogger that its Tesla Roadster, if simply left alone, will grow to be a "brick." In electronics, "bricking" means to make a device no longer functional. Tesla claims the problem is one of upkeep, not unsound engineering.

Buy brand new car for price of brand new battery

Michael Degusta is the blogger who spoke about the Roadster 53-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. He said it can cost as much as $40,000 to get a new battery pack. This is the only way to fix the issue when the car goes unused and the power source is wrecked.

Blogger states his Roadster bricked

Degusta, -- who has put $5,000 down on Tesla’s forthcoming Model X crossover, prepared to launch in 2014 -- said:

“A Tesla Roadster that is simply parked without being plugged in will eventually become a ‘brick.’ The parasitic load from the car’s always-on subsystems continually drains the battery and if the battery’s charge is ever totally depleted, it is essentially destroyed.”

Others have troubles with Roadster

According to Degusta, this may be an issue that the new Model S sedan has an issue with. He said that he spoke with a Tesla service manager who said the same problem had occurred to five other individuals with Roadsters.

Another Tesla owner, Max Drucker, sent an email to Tesla's CEO Elon Musk alerting him to the problem. After leaving his car in storage for six weeks, Drucker states, he found his vehicle unable to be recharged.

Ducker said, according to Wired.com:

“I had no idea I could be putting my car at risk. This was an accident. I didn’t know.”

Not Tesla’s problem

Tesla responded to the states, however, acquainting the problem to neglecting an oil change in an automobile with an internal combustion motor. The company maintains the concern in how the vehicles are maintained, not in the automobiles themselves.

A statement issued by Tesla read, in part:

“All automobiles require some level of owner care. For example, combustion vehicles require regular oil changes or the engine will be destroyed. Electric vehicles should be plugged in and charging when not in use for maximum performance. All batteries are subject to damage if the charge is kept at zero for long periods of time.”
