I want to start selling some things on ebay but do not know where to start. I have never sold anything on Ebay before. Are there any books or guides out there that will show a beginner how to set up an auction the most prosperous ways?

Have you actually checked out the Ebay site itself? It is full of detailed information and resources to help you get started. I think they have one of the most helpful websites around but you have to take the time to read it 
That being said my own personal tips from testing and tracking:
Be specific in your title desriptions
5 day auction listings work best
Start your auction on a Friday and have it end on a Tuesday or Wednesday had the best results.
Offer to ship to Canada, its an open market!
