I find it hard to believe such a thing would work, when having a phisical pawnshop you have the ability to look at the items people want to pawn and have the look and feel of the product.
Would you really buy something from someone that you can't really touch, keep in mind that you are not buying from well established businisess.
Ok so what about escrow, sure this is a option but this costs and the seller have to send the item first because offcourse you don't want to pay for the shipment costs, the seller has to pay for this, in combination with the fact you wouldn't like the product that is offered so there you would have a possible extra shipping fee or postal fee whatever you want to call it for returning the item.
The sell buy price ratio is not competitive with the regular pawn business and it takes lot more hassle, and why would people wait so long for the process of sending the item and approval.
So basicly you would make less more money and for some items it is not even worth it and for the seller that wants to pawn their item it is economicly unwise to deal with a internet based pawnshop because he or she already has to deduct the postal, shipping fee of the price that is given for the item.
Wouldn't it be much easier to go to the corner and walk in and collect your money right away if the pawnshop owner is interested in the item that is offered for sale.
I don't offcourse know what other people can say about this, but this is my oppinion and really would not start such a business.
It's like selling buckets of seawater at the beach if you ask me.

Hell yeah! Especially if you know what you want. My last two purchases:
Starship Titanic (the game)
Deliverance's third album "What a Joke", 1988. It's a Christian thrash band...yeah...how many "established businesses" carry that!?
Then there's collectibles....
Oh! heck, I ordered a whole dining set online (not from a pawn shop, though), $4K.
eCommerce makes it so you aren't "stuck" with whatever limited/crappy inventories are in your town. And even if they are, the pricing is much better. example: my window blinds. Locally: $9600, online: $3,800.

Yes offcourse your right Rolo, but however there is some trust involved buying online, i really don't think you made a transfer out in the blue to the person that sold you these items.
What i say was if someone is offering you a item online if you are a internet pawnshop owner, how can you tell if the product is any good, you can't, you have to hold it for your self and check if it works etc.
May i ask you how did you make your purchase and did you convinced your self that you where not getting *&^%&* , if i would make a purchase online i make sure if it is a respectable business and if it is not a respectable business i would use escrow.
So therefor i think such a idea is not usefull, a pawnshop that is.
A good thing though that you got your items you never know on the internet.

There is trust going to brick-and-mortar shops and even retail stores. I'm pretty sure a retail store is more apt to ^%$@#^ it's customers than a pawn shop is. I've had no problems online, a few IRL.
quote: Originally posted by knowledge seeker i really don't think you made a transfer out in the blue to the person that sold you these items.
Why not? Online has better checks-and-balances than IRL. Can anyone leave customer feedback in your local store's "profile" on the front door? And who uses the BBB anyway? Nobody from my experience.

Sure you can: pictures, descriptions. How many people scrutinise their jewelry when they buy it from a retail store?
When I sold M:tG cards online, I scanned them and put up a web site with super-detailed scans of every card, every blemish. Why? I don't want complaints; I want the customer to know exactly what he is buying.
quote: Originally posted by knowledge seeker May i ask you how did you make your purchase and did you convinced your self that you where not getting *&^%&* ,
eBay, Amazon zShops, word-of-mouth. The furniture purchase was on a lark pretty much, GreatPricedFurniture.com. I've been shopping online for 11 years now; this is not new to me. I've been online since 1982.

If a shop has 1500 positive comments and 1 negative, I'd say it's reputable. This is common. Escrow is just a fee for the paranoid. Use a credit card for backing/muscle.

It could be. One thing I miss since the days of BBSes is the LOCAL online community. If a pawn shop in my town had its inventory online, I would check it out regularly. Will I drive to one to browse? Nope.
Ah! A pawn-shop network online linking inventories! Hmmm..there's an idea. Wonder if I'm not the first schmuck to think of it?

Why do you say that? Why does one "never know" on the Internet?

I am not talking about trust when a pawnshop sells you a item, i mean when a seller sells a item to a "internet pawnshop", there is a difference in the reply to the qoute you mentioned, in this case the trust must come from the internet pawnshop owner.
When you talk about customer feedback, you mean sites like e-bay.com, sure there is some trust to gain with that but if i was you i wouldn't rely on that to much because these can be manipulated, really it can.
You talk about pictures etc but this mean doesn't mean anything my friend, sure when you sell pictures you can make a decent impression.
And if you are the seller then you wouldn't have to much to worry about as the buyer should.
How does the buyer know you really have this card, you could have already sold the card and offer it for sale again, maybe not on the same site but on a other site.
Tell me this would you trust people that said i have a labtop for you that you can buy, here i have a picture for you.( A seller that wants you to buy their item, selling it to you as a internet pawnshop owner that is)
Would you say, well nice picture, sure i buy it i make a transfer, ofcourse not my friend and for this reason this wouldnt work in my oppinion.
that is what i am trying to explain to you, and yes you right about buying
with credit card, insurrance will cover any eventual losses.
If a site has 1500 posite comments and one negative you would trust them you say, but how can you tell these comments are for real.
There are hundreds of sites out there that have false testimonials only for gaining confedence of potential victims.
A site like amozon.com and e-bay.com sure ok , some truth in that i can't deny that but a fresh new website or on a domain that is already registered for a while but totally unknown, the sites you mention, well they are quite famous to say the least, there are numerous websites that don't have that high profile would you take notice for there testimonials, offcourse not.
When i asked how do you make your purchase i ment how did you pay for it, credit card, western union, money transfer, etc.
In my town the pawnshop owners have their inventory online, (cash converters)
Come on my friend a internet pawnshop, never would this work, once again would you trust people sending you pictures and descriptions of their items?
Why does one never know on the internet you say, because if you are buying from a non-high profile web store such as e-bay amozon.com etc.
You have a big chance getting ripped off, it is the simple truth, with the internet the grounds for con-men got a lot bigger.
And don't forget about phishing and pharming, with these kind of techniques i also mean you never know on the internet.
I have to say your local pawn shop owner hasn't discovered the power of internet yet

oooooOOOOOHHHHH! Duh! I totally did not think of that.

Go on...

Ummm...I did buy my palmtop from an online auction and I got accessories for it from various pawnshops. I use it to program routers w/o lugging a laptop around.
quote: Originally posted by knowledge seeker How does the buyer know you really have this card, you could have already sold the card and offer it for sale again, maybe not on the same site but on a other site.
Because when the buyer gets his card and it does not match the scanned image, he would have a legitimate gripe. If it's one thing buyers WILL do is complain (in your feedback, which is easy to do). The next buyer who sees that my most recent feedback was negative will probably pass by and I kill my own profits. The online checks-and-balances are very effective and that is why eBay makes a killing. And that is what eBay really is: an online consignment store/pawn shop of sorts.
quote: Originally posted by knowledge seeker If a site has 1500 posite comments and one negative you would trust them you say, but how can you tell these comments are for real.
Because you can only leave feedback on a person with whom you have made a transaction. The alternative explanation is that we all are in the Matrix.

Yeah...they are called "Brixdale" and "Profit Masters", etc. ehehehee
If the lone pawn shop is linked to Amazon or does business on eBay, it will have credible feedback. I agree, a self-made page o' testamonials is useless.
quote: Originally posted by knowledge seeker When i asked how do you make your purchase i ment how did you pay for it, credit card, western union, money transfer, etc.
Ah...usually with PayPal (linked to my credit card) or by credit card directly. I don't waste my time with checks/MOs; get real, this is the XXIst century.
quote: Originally posted by knowledge seeker Come on my friend a internet pawnshop, never would this work, once again would you trust people sending you pictures and descriptions of their items?
That is a bit tricky, but it could be feasible.

I would say "always a chance" but not a "big chance". Exercising good judgement (not paranoia) will keep you from getting ripped off. Besides, I've saved so much $ online that I can get ripped off pretty good and still come out even. (No, that is not an invitation, heh)
The more I think of it, how would an online pawn shop really differ from the online auction sites?

Rolo could you please tell me how this quote feature works, when conversating with you it would make things a lot easier for me.
Surely you are not typing the whole quotes that you posted, some sort of highlighting right and then some additional action.

Whatdahell are you talking about?
ks, just hit the QUOTE button instead of POST REPLY.
What I do is copy the entire quote (it will be in your text editor) to the clipboard, delete all but the part I am conversing with, type my response, then paste it again, type what I want to say to that part, repeat.
About halfway through, I'll delete the first half of the quote, then re-copy it to the clipboard so I have less to delete. Do it a few times and it won't be as cumbersome as it sounds. It makes for a nice conversation feel.
