Name change/affecting your credit  Reply with quote

I was just wondering if anyone knows if changing your name in Canada will affect your credit history in any way?

Thanks! Very Happy

I don't know about America, Jr., but I did it and it affected my credit history. Everything pre-new-name was wiped and only current accounts made it to Equifax. I was surprised since I thought the key index was your socialism security number, but apparently not. Advise: get a recent copy of your credit reports before you change your name so you can have your stuff re-added afterwards. Unless you'd rather not.

I my state, I downloaded the two-page form from the state's web site, filled it in with Acrobat, printed it, filed it with my payment, and got the court order 4 weeks later. I made about 50 copies to send to all my account-holders. It's actually a snap. YMMV.
