I hope no one has a debit card through Bank of America. Not only were they an awful bank before this, but now they arisen to a new level. So now they want to start charging a $5 monthly fee to use your own money through a debit card. Are they crazy! I don't do business with them anymore, in fact I just refinanced out of them so my loan wouldn't go through Bank of America. I hope everyone finds a new bank who uses cash to pay for consumer goods. I belong to a credit union that doesn't have fees for checking, debit card use, etc....

Interesting,
I dumped Bank of America back when they raised interest rates on all their credit card holders. Not that they were the only ones, but as usual, these whores were the first, and now we see the same thing again with this debit card fee.
Think about how deperate they are to avoid another collapse since there is no way congress of obama could every hope of getting another bail out approved. It shouldn't have been approved to start with, but now even the morons can see it was a huge mistake to think too big to fail was a good strategy to follow.
What did obama do when Bank of America came a beggin once again, he called his buddy Waren Buffett with a sweet insiders deal if he bailed out BoA with $5B preferred private stock deal. Imagine that, something no one else had insiders information on, but obama tipped off Buffett, talk about corruption, this just ads to the issue these banks should have been left to fail and file bankruptcy like any other company, even Solyndra.
When I heard about Buffett bailout, I knew it was all over for Bank of America, and this just cements my gut feeling, so time will tell as it alwasy does, but the run on withdrawals has already started, so think about how much more damage the loss of capital will have on this bank which already is facing billions in losses on existing mortgages, never mind CountryWide exposure which they were going to dump division to lighten the losses, too little too late, then combined with the layoffs of over 30K announced, and dozens of branches being shut down, RIP BoA, your greed has finally caught up to you. LOL
Success to all,

The question I have is "Why does anyone have a bank account with them?" No really what are the reasons. Can someone give us one? What do they offer that my credit union doesn't that I would need. My bank has everything I've ever needed.

I wanna say something. I just hope I am not wrong. The problem with debit cards is that your money is already with them. Easily, they can charge this and that, and you can not complain because the fees have already been deducted. Unlike credit cards, one can still complain and refuse to pay, or even change banks for that.

Or I can look at that in reverse and say I belong to a credit union where there aren't any fees to use my Visa debit card the bill is paid for immediately and I don't have to deal with non payment due to being late and getting charged a fee or they've raised the interest rate on the credit card and I'm suddenly unable to pay the bill because of other things coming up and now I get charged interest. Also, with a debit card if you have a problem there is what's called a zero liability agreement where if your card is used in fraud you notify the bank and then refund your account within a certain amount of days. With my Discover card one time someone stole my cc number and charged the amount and I had to call and put a hold on the card, they told me to rip up my card and they sent me a new one within 2 weeks. So if you really wanted to use the card within the 2 weeks you were hosed. With my bank if they had to reissue me a new card fine, because I can just go to my bank and take out cash in the meantime to survive.

I do not know about this, but what I am aware of is that some companies are starting to honor ATM cards to be used as debit cards. I think it is a feature of marketing of some banks. I personally do not agree with this because this will pose as an even bigger risk for the card holder.

Actually I've been using my Visa Debit Card for at least 10 years through my bank and it does work as an ATM also. Not sure what you mean?

I don't know that I'd call it a service any more when they're nicking you $5 a month.

The monthly 5 Dollar fee starting next year when you use your Debit card to make purchases is annoying. However, there is no fee if you use it only to get cash from the ATM. And that is exactly the only reason why I still do banking with Bank of America. There are plenty of BoA ATMs out there. For all my other banking I just use the services of my local credit union.

That is exactly the problem. There will be charges beyond your control. You might as well use the card for ATM purposes only to avoid these charges. And of you have a good credit rating, better just apply for a credit card. It is so much better.
