| What are "display ads"? |
|
|
Sorry if this is a stupid question but this has been vexing me lately and I can't seem to google up any kind of straight answer.
What exactly are "display ads"?
I've seen this phrase bandied about a lot of the webmaster newsletters and articles lately and I have no idea what it means.
Anybody?
P.S. My level of expertise with online advertising is that I've been an Adsense publisher for about three years.

Display ads are banner ads as others have said. The way you pay for them is typically MUCH different than the way you pay for Adwords/Adsense type ads.
Adwords/Adsense are Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ads. You don't pay by the impression. You pay each time someone clicks on the ad.
Display are banner ad placements are also called CPM ads (cost-per-thousand) because they are generally priced by the 1000 impressions. You typically pay some ad network who has hundreds or thousands of sites where they can display banner ads. They will rotate your banner ad in on those sites based on the number of impressions you purchase. It doesn't matter how many times the ad is clicked on. You are paying by the impressions.
Display ads typically have a dramatically lower click-thru-rate (CTR) than do PPC ads. They generally drive lower quality traffic because the ads are much less targeted than PPC ads. But they are also MUCH cheaper form of advertising. So even though the CTR is much lower, if you get them at the right rate per thousand impressions, they can still be cost effective.

Display ads are the ads image or animation type ads that never convert for you but make websites a ton of money.
If you are an advertiser and you really want high converting ads you want to do contextual advertising with text ads. Basically that's a fancy way of saying text ads next to your content or blog posts. For example
