Secondary IRA???  Reply with quote

I just opened a Roth IRA. I was wondering if my wife should have her own? Currently she doesn't work so she has no type of retirement plan. Or should I just focus on one IRA.

She needs to have earned income to fund a Roth IRA.

But see this article for exceptions for non-working spouse:

So here is how completely wrong I originally was. Not only can you contribute to a Roth IRA on her behalf, you can also contribute to a traditional IRA on her behalf and double your deduction. Subject to all the eligibility requirements discussed in that article.
