Financial Quicksand...  Reply with quote

from MSN Money (http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/Savinganddebt/Learntobudget/P84970.asp)

quote:
You don't have to be young and single or live in a big, expensive city to suddenly find yourself sucked into financial quicksand. Here are some of the most common holes people fall into:

-Buying a more expensive house than you can afford.

-Car payments that you can't quite manage.

-Sending the kids to private school.

-Stretching to make a major "lifestyle investment," like a boat or a vacation home, that requires way more upkeep than you had anticipated.

-Signing up for services -- yard cleaning, house cleaning, full-time child care, fancy-shmancy club memberships, overpriced cable-Internet-satellite surveillance packages.

Unlike a vacation or a new dress, these are bills that keep on coming -- and are never paid off. Once they become part of your lifestyle, it can be hard to remember that you really can’t afford them.

Must cancel cell phone plan... Have you bought anything lately that came with all those unexpected costs?

New clothes and vacations... hmm... MSN Money is a fine site, but I'll bet alligator skin to doughnuts that their editor isn't married.

She's married and up to her eyeballs in debt, apparently - despite making $72,000/year.

"Despite Making..."

My theory is there is no limit to the human capacity to spend the precise equation of [ income - $19.99 = whew ] every month. That includes my family, of course. And probably no need for them, I could do this part of life all on my own, hah.

Right along these lines is the book The Millionaire Next Door. It is definitely high on the 'required reading' list.
