We learned about this back in high school, so I know it's not a huge deal.
Any good references out there that will walk you through the process?
thanks a lot

You might look on the IRS website for Tax Topics 301,303, and 352.

i am usually super careful about filing my own taxes ...I think IRS has tendency to audit people who do their own taxes more (because of mistakes they might make) than a professional tax accountant

Actually, I think if that information were to be publicly disclosed by the IRS, which of course they won't, the chances of being audited if you did your own taxes using a tax program such as Turbo Tax are less, because the program catches the mistakes.

Are you wanting to file personal taxes or business taxes? If your taxes are pretty straight forward, such as W2's, interest income, mortgage interest write offs, then I'd recommend using Turbo Tax or something similar. However, if your finances are a bit more complicated (i.e. multiple property owner, own your own business), you might benefit more by hiring an accountant or even H&R Block. You want to write off as much as you can, within the boundaries set by the IRS, so it wouldn't hurt to have someone helping and teaching you along the way.

| AUDIT OR TAX PREPARER |
|
|
The word FRAUD crackdown mean, the moderate to low income level people.
I have been audited every other year for 20 years.
Of course after the money is spent and they think hopefully no records.
Last year, they took back child credit age 18 and $300 rebate credit.
My question, why error was not caught before refund payment.
Because it was self done via mail and on an october extension.
This was maybe the second time it was found valid.
You might be right with the very limited audit of paid tax preparer,
these audited once.
No paid tax preparer for over 35 years.
I use the tax application download and then print, state hand done.
The best being turbotax when FREE, then taxact STILL, trying online taxhawk efile this year. GG

If you are filing your taxes for the first time, then you may be wondering what to do. There are several things you need to do before you file your taxes. Filing your taxes does not need to be an intimidating process; you really do not need to worry about a wide variety of forms and tax laws, since computer software can help to simplify the entire process.

Pay the professional to do it for you. Believe me, they are in the business of saving you money and know the latest loop holes and legal deductions and how to avoid audits. Then when you do get audited they go with you! Priceless!
