| Implications to ecommerce - chip and pin |
|
|
Hi there,
Are there ay implications in regards to the new chip and pin system for sites with ecommerce?
I havent found anything myself, but will developers like myself have to allow for the user to insert their pin.
I feel that because of chip and pin, theives will now move more towards online stores, because they dont need to insert their pin at present, although there is the AVS system which alot more retailers are now using
Any thoughts and comments would be good.
many thanks

Hi Jamie.
It appears that chip and pin is a UK technology?

As an online merchant in US, I've got access to the AVS (address verification system) as well as the security code system, which is the 3 digit code on the back of most credit cards, which appears to be for similar purpose as chip and pin, except it's to ensure that the card is present for online sales.

I guess chip and pin is for non-online sales, to provide better security against stolen credit cards where signatures can easily be faked.
In the US we use pins for debit cards, and signature for credit cards.
Security would definately be better if we required pin for credit cards too.
