How much are my coins worth?  Reply with quote

Okay, I know of some people who collect coins because of when they was made and stuff, well I have a few coins and I am not so sure what they are worth, I am sure some of them aren't worth anything but still willing to ask. I think my quarter is worth a lot though. List below on the dates and the coin type.

Quarters
1965

Nickels
1973
1964
1982

Pennies
1969
1970

The quarter is in amazing shape.
The nickels are mint, the 82 one has something like gum but its 82 its probably not worth anything anyways.
The 1970 penny is in good shape and the 69 is a little dark and as this gumish thing on it. The coins are probably cleanable. Got any hints on cleaning? Leave a reply.

So what are they worth guys? Thanks!

Well, we're probably the wrong people to ask, unless there's a numismaticist among our members (a person who collects coins as a hobby). I'd suggest going to a bookstore where they sell numismatics magazines and take home a few.

PS -- one thing I do know is DON'T CLEAN THE COINS -- if they have any value as collector's items, they have to be in original condition. Cleaning them destroys their value as collectibles.

good luck. Smile

I do collect coins actually, but don't really know much about them. haha.

I had an old Chinese coin with the hole in the middle of it - was worth a bomb but someone stole it and I honestly cannot farthom who - only possibility is a member of my family.

Yeah don't clean them with any chemicals - brush them off maybe - try and get the chewing gum off it if it doesn't mean scratching it. But generally don't try to alter their appearance.

I've also got a Roman coin - well I think it's Roman - not sure though to be honest - I'm inclined to believe its actually alien because of the coloring on it - but I'm more than likely wrong on that idea.

I own a few collections, proof set and such.
Yah don't ever clean a relic or collectable.
Likely your coins are worth face value, unless you melted them down, but thats illegal.
They would be worth more than face value only if they contain an oddity like double stamping or are from a mint that only made a few. Another aspect to add value would be if they are unciculated/untouched. I have many coins from the era you listed, but they are only worth double or so for the uncirculated.

Get a price book as has been suggested, expect to get only a fraction of hte value listed as you are likely not a retailer.

I also have old coins in our country, it is not that I am into collecting it but my grandparents happen to have one and they gave it to me. Old coins in our country are being sold at $10 to $20. The price varies on the weight and how old it is. [deleted]

Interesting. I have some dollar mint sets, which our old boss gave us annually as reward for good attendance. I don't collect coins, but I think I'll let them age a little bit and maybe see if they'd be worth more.

I'm pretty sure you can buy a little book that covers how much the coins are worth.

As far as cleaning in general, I don't know if that is good or bad. I know though in some cases, such as with toned coins, cleaning carefully with q-tips and some chemical (I forget what my Dad used for that).

Good luck. I hope you luck out and find some worth a lot.

I kind of have a similar situation with my old collectible baseball cards, comic books, etc.

US Coins that are 1964 and older (quarters, dimes and halves) are 90% silver and would have value based on mintages, condition (never clean!!) and silver content (spot price is about $36 an oz right now). Halves from 1965-1970 are 40% silver and also worth more than face value. Nickles from 1942-1945 are referre to as war nickles and are 35% silver.

I have a friend who keeps coins for collection. He just simply followed on what his dad did, and that is, collecting coins. Today, his collection is really worth a fortune. He also collects coins from different countries.
