I just read through this whole thread and then saw that it's about two months old-I'm curious, did you get some direction on what you're going to do?

I'm sorry to hear about your girlfriends health, fibro is horrible. I have close friends who deal with it--hopefully she'll find a way to manage her pain and be able to pursue her career in Anthropology Smile

Have you looked into government help? You could possibly go to school and get grants to help pay for your loans. A friend of mine just received 4,000 dollars for what seems like nothing.

Don't lose hope. There's always something good waiting out there for you as long as you strive to find it. Getting back into college is definitely a good choice. Just keep on looking for a job while you're at it. Goodluck!

I have to agree here. The problem is not so much the debt, it's the lack of income. Many people would love to have his debt load Very Happy. It's all relative to your situation.

This amount of debt could quickly be wiped out with a modest increased cash flow. The first thing is to upgrade your current employment - better salary and more hours. Next I would look for a second income, a side job or better yet, start a blog about your favorite hobby. You can get free blogs at blogger.com and quickly add Google Adsense and Amazon.com products that relate to your topic.

Good luck to you and let us know how you're doing.

I do not think that is great advice. No one needs these programs to manage their money. If they have access to the internet www.Mint.com is a wonderful resource and it's FREE.

No. My girlfriend is in school getting a BA in anthropolgy. She is almost finished with school. The downside is that she was recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and her body hurts all the time. She is worried that she wont be able to work or find work that is comfortable for her. This adds to my stress as being the main "bread winner" of the family.

I am wondering if I should go back to school. I cannot keep working for minimum wage.

Please realize that if you were to marry your girlfriend any debt she has from going to school to get a BA could make your situation go from bad to worse when you two would in essence join your finances. You never said what sort of financial situation your girlfriend is in, but keep in mind that if you marry you both could go down together if you don't deal with YOUR debt problem first.

Just some general information you should consider: Student loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy whereas car loans, personal loans, and credit card debt can be. Keep that in mind if you get in such a rut that you consider this option (although my vote is with the military suggestion right now). Paying off your 10k of cc debt at your rate is going to take a long time. Consider how long you're really going to need to wait to move on with you life - and if some of these suggestions others have posted are not worth pursuing to ACHIEVE that long term goal.

Another note: I don't know if your girlfriend has student debt for sure, but if she does and it's a federal student loan - if she were to be diagnosed by the physician as being physically disable to work, she would be eligible to have them forgiven. Completely. Although I've read that the paperwork process on this is a nightmare and takes time.

If you're motivated, and a people person, you could move to a company like Target and work you way up. But you must be motivated. I was disheartened to go back to my hometown Target over Christmas. I was a cashier there when I was 16 with this lady. I saw her cashiering there 7 years later. She wasn't even a supervisor yet - which I know would be possible if you have the people skills and motivation with a company like Target. You want to MOVE up. Make a logical goal now on how you're going to provide a livable income for yourself and get to work at it.
