hi all, Im a college student in the middle of my junior year. I have looked at a few internships but they required me to find a place to live over 100 miles away from my home. They also did not pay well and some did not even give college credit. My major is business management by the way. I just got hired back at a semi trailer corporation where I have worked twice before. I will be getting $11.11 an hr while working here. My parents also are not too enthused about me traveling far away for an internship. I have tried in the nearby city which is 20 miles away but no luck in what I want to do. I have decided that rather than stressing over and internship, I will work till the end of my college career at the trailer company then find a management job. In my opinion, I dont think internships are that great in that in my case I will need to find a residence fairly far away. Usually they only last for 3-4 months (such as the summer). They also do not pay very well. I only see them as a few valuable sentences one can add to their resume for more prestige. I decided that working at the trailer facility and making $11.11 an hr for a year and a half would give me and abundant income for me. I plan on getting engaged in a year or so. I think that the large amount of money I will be making at the trailer place is better than stressing and looking for an internship. I have learned a few managerial skills at the trailer place that I noted in my resume from past experience. I believe that making money now till the end of my college career and finding a management job later is the way to go. How do you guys feel about this? I have will have around $7000 in the bank after I buy books. I do not owe the college anything for like loans or fees. Am I making the right choice? I believe I am because I can write on my resume that I have learned some managerial skills from THIS job. It just seems like to much of a hassle and not too much reward when looking for the internship. THANKS!

First of let me congratulate you on so close to graduating and having no debt.
Second let me say if you have researched and thought out year decision it sounds like you did i don't think there is not a wrong answer but there might be a better one career wise...
As interships are great especially if they are in your field. Many will pay for your housing or give you a stipend (the ones you found may not do this or you may not have asked?)......
I would say in general an intership in your field in the long run would possible pay off more (as they might hire you when you graduate), but if it doesnt suit your needs or isn't worth it ......as you would basically not earn any money then you have to look it as the experience worth the sacrifice...... that is a personnel call you will have to make.....
Hope this helps...

thanks....yea I might see an advantage if I got an internship where I wanted to work later on, but I really dont have any idea what kind of place I would like to persue. This is kind of why Id rather just make as much money as I can and then get a management job later on that I know will be where I stay for a long time in my life. I mean if I get an internship to a place that im not real excited about, the pay will me likely poor, and I will not want to return to that job. I will have more experience but I just dont think an internship would help that much more than just doing my thing and making more money than I would with an internship. Thanks for the comment.

I don't know what companies you are talking to for internships but it is my experience and my friends that interships pay VERY well... I was Making 15/hr an hour for my soph intern then 18 for junior yr intern.
It sounds like you already have your mind made up...
I would personnally persue an internship and then if oyu cant get one fall back on your current job which that maybe the point you are at??,...

Go with your gut on this one. Internships give you experience at that job and if you don't land a career there after graduation then it's not worth the hassle. You might not make as much money right out of school because you have no work experience but then again if you have no debt a smaller salary will be fine for a year or so. Then you have your foot in the door where you would like to be and you can move up or on to something else. Good luck to you and if nothing else buy a nice rock for the lady! Even if she said she doesn't need it she wants one.

I wonder how he is doing now, five years later? In his 2005 post he was a year from graduation and was planning to get married.

Neat! Yes, it would be nice to get an update now. My first internship was 11 an hour. It went up from there, hopefully it has for him too!
