I think sometimes people need a little help when they are down financially. I'm no fan of having people become children of a welfare state though. With all your ventures, I'm sure you'll have no need for welfare, FF... Smile

Read government websites to see whether you are better off receiving government welfare. Factor in the effort of working as well, so if you had to choose between getting $20,000 for working and $20,000 from the government for doing nothing, then obviously it better to get $20,000 from the government for doing nothing. However, instead of doing nothing, you can try education or training in the hope that later on you can get a higher paying job.

I don't mind people getting welfare if they are working and need to supplement their income, have a real disability, but people who use the welfare system as a way of life irks the daylights out of me. I know of people who say they can't work, but each year up pops another junior. Say they can't work, but can produce a baby. Evil or Very Mad I only make $18,000 a year and do get child support, but I refuse to go on welfare. I do have a little pride. I want more girls to know if they want something out of life they have to work for it. Some people who are on welfare always have the best of outfits and complain of not having enough money. I have been confronted about buying their food stamps. You want to talk about upset. They are taking food away from their children. I guess this is a real sore subject with me. I'm so sick and tired of paying for their utilities, food, clothing, and rent. What makes able minded people feel they are entitled to everything free? Than you have some bleeding hearts who say I feel so sorry for them. They get free christmas presents, free coats every year. They better be glad I don't work for socail services. Why don't they get a job and do like the rest of us. Clip coupons, turn down their heat (why should they we pay for their heat if their short of money), distinguish between wants and needs (why should they when they feel they are entitled to it), and save (why save when they think its owed to them). Oh yea, if they save they might have to count it as income and they might not qualify for benefits. I'm sorry if I sound so cynical, in fact I'm not sorry, but I am so sick and tired of my taxes and your taxes taking care of able minded people who can work, but won't. Like I said this is a very touchy subject with me. I can make it on what I make. I own a home in a decent area, but I had to save my money for a few years to get this house. Alot of blood sweat and tears. You asked what I thought of welfare and this is how I feel. I better stop while I am ahead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Exclamation

I think that the reform over the last several years has helped some but it hasn't stopped the abuse of the system. I think people need to use welfare for just what it was meant for for a helping hand when you need it. If you are out of a job for extended periods of time and have exhausted all efforts. But yeah I'm with Seaar... what I'm really tired of is eating hotdogs with macncheese 20/30 days a month while they either sell their stamps or buy steaks on it. I've seen it. When I had to use food stamps I always bought wisely and never anything that we wouldn't eat when we didn't need them. I think food stamps should be more like the WIC program where they are dictated to exactly what their stamps can buy not an actual $$$ amount.

welp.. i checked but didnt qualify. i even lied on the website a few times testing just to see how bad off id have to be in order to qualify. it was amazing. id have to be making $200 a week, paying $600 a month for rent in order to get $80 worth of foodstamps.

that leaves $200 to pay power, water, gas, cable, phone, and mandatory car insurance, dont forget car payments and cellphone but then again thats a luxary. anyone know someone on food stamps with a cellphone? lol

im not good with taxes but i think i made under $13,000 in 2004 thanx to being unemployed for half the year. think i'll get most of it back?

That's a pretty good attitude...

"Since you didn't grow up with jobs opps and/or the competent parents I did, you should head off to foriegn soil and spill your blood so that I can enjoy my perch in the ivory tower."

As many have said, welfare should be something to give the less fortunate a leg up. It shouldn't be a way of life. If you're not making enough to pay the bills, then there is no shame in taking welfare to make ends meet until you can pay the bills, assuming that doesn't continue for your entire life...
