Introductory Web Development  Reply with quote

Hi Folks:

I am in the process of creating my own web site. It will be a slow process, because I want to make sure I do it right. I have all sorts of free downloads and other stuff if anyone needs the information. I also purchased the book "Absolute Beginner's Guide To Creating Web Pages" by Todd Stauffer. I first found out about it by checking my local library. They have E-books you can download for a 24 hour period.

If anyone that has a web site running, and created it themselves, please share any information with me that you can.

Does anyone have real experience with working as an Affiliate. I need to know the real scoop, if it is worth it or not. I have a very limited budget, and do not want to waste money on frivolous ventures.

Thank you for paying attention to my post.

I'm planning an intro to web development article soon, which should hopefully have some useful information for you, but in the meantime wanted to touch on your affiliate question.

There are lots of different types of affiliate programs out there on the net. You can help people sell e-books, loans, dental plans, hosting, books, posters, business opportunities, etcetera ad nauseum. These types of affiliate programs can be done with or without a website. You can also sell advertising space on your website via established advertising networks, which obviously requires a website. Naturally, you can make money by selling your own products or services, or by selling advertising space independently, but these wouldn't be considered affiliate programs.

Any of these affiliate programs could be very lucrative. Whether or not a particular program will be worth your time depends on several factors. One important factor is do you have the means to get your affiliate links, banners or ads in-front of lots of visitors who would be interested in buying? If you have a lonely little website without much traffic you are not going to be sucessful with any affiliate program. You must consider that it can take dozens or hundreds of visitors before somebody is even interested in checking out an affiliate link, and then only a fraction of those will wind-up paying for something, to earn you your affiliate cut. On the other hand, if you can promote and drive lots of targeted traffic to your affiliate links then you've got a chance at making some decent bucks.

It takes a lot of patience to see what programs will work for you, and usually a lot of work to promote those programs. Remember that there are people out there who are making big bucks with affiliate programs, and even more people who are at least making enough to make it worthwhile to them.

Can anyone explain html in a nutshell? I don't understand how you can write weird code and produce the results that appear.

HTML stands for hyper text markup language. It's just a simple language that lets you specify text and images to use and their layout and style. There is also obviously syntax for linking pictures and text to other webpages, which is the HT part of HTML.

After you write the "weird code" as you put it, a program like Internet Explorer or Netscape let you view the pages that the HTML describes. Hope that helps.
