Disputing item on Credit reports??  Reply with quote

I have recently noticed I had a collections item on my credit report that should not be there. It was a very old bill that was paid on time, and I was told this by the company. I signed up to freecreditreport.com and disputed the item there. They took it off almost immediatley after they checked on it. The problem is that this sight only takes the collections item off of the Experian report. My question is, Where can I go for free to dispute the item with the other 2 credit agencies? I do not want to pay to see my credit report with them, just remove the negative item.

Just wanted to point out something about the "Free Credit Report.com" bit. That is kind of a scam because they charge you for something. In fact, the people advertising that "freecreditreport.com" stuff on TV and internet were recently sued (by the Federal govt.) for false advertising. You are actually entitled to a free credit report, from each of the rmajor reporting companies. This was a recent law passed by Congress. The only legitimate site to go through is the Federal Trade Commission, located here:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/credit/ycr_free_reports.htm
They have links to the three agencies, and if you go through the FTC website, it costs you nothing to get your credit report. You can get one free one from each company per year, so if you stagger it out, you can have a credit report coming to you every four months.

Great info there. Thanks a lot. I have filed disputes with the other companies so they should be resolving it. The bill in question was paid on time, and should have never been sent to collections in the first place. I am glad I found out about it because it dropped my credit score almost 100 points.

What freecreditreport.com doesn't state, until you sign up, is that you start paying them monthly after the first 30 days. If you fail, or forget to call them, they take like $14.95 a month out of your account. So, yeah it is a scam in my book. Free my ass.
