Is there any type of investment vehical that would enable me to invest pretax dollars into some sort of fund that I could later use to go back to school for a masters or PhD and not be penalized when taking it out for educational expenses?

Is there a fund like the one described for someone to invest into for there own advanced degree.
I got my bachelors in chemical engineering now I am working towards my PE license and I want to put away money to go back to school later for a masters/PhD. Is there anyway to put this money away with pretax dollars to be taken out at a later date without a tax penalty if used for education. I have heard of something called a 730 (or some 3 digit number which maybe references what I am talking about).
I hope this clarifies what I am talking about.

I am from alaska. I would be going back to school in 5-10 years which would be out of state. I also have the option of doing distance learning if I choose to do optical physics, so in that case I would be in alaska but paying for school out of state (which is the same as instate for private).

Thank you for the information, it seems the process of a 529 is going to be somewhat more complicated that I thought.
