Taller babies earn more money later on according to study
CTV.ca News Staff
The height of a baby boy on his first birthday could predict what his income will be when he is middle-aged, suggests a new study.
The magic number cited in the research, published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, is 80 centimetres.
Infant boys measured at that height and above are far more likely to pursue higher education and find well-paying jobs, the study says.
In contrast, baby boys who were 72 cm's or less at one year grew up to have the least education and lowest incomes.
Shorter babies were also more likely to do manual labour.
Surprisingly, the study found that the link between height and income did not appear to be affected by socio-economic status.
However, it did not rule out that discrimination against shorter men may have played a part in the outcome.
Researchers studied more than 4,500 men born in Helsinki between 1934 and 1944. Scientists measured their height at age one, and again in 1990.
Dr. David Barker, the lead author on the study, said this effect was either because slow physical growth might be accompanied by slow brain growth, or infants may be smaller because they are undernourished.
"While the study was of children in Finland in the 1930s and 1940s, it is relevant for children in today's Britain," Barker said, the British Broadcasting Corporation reported.
"There are too many babies who are not being given the opportunity to thrive and that will have an effect on their future development.
Previous studies have looked at a possible link between childhood size and education success, but most have looked at development up to school age.

Heh, I personally think that this is just a bunch of speculation, but thank God I'm tall! Anyway, I don't think that your physical height has that much to do with your financial success, especially since person-to-person contact is not nearly as common now as it used to be (though whether this is a good thing is definitely arguable).

I can't find any logical reason to support their theory. This is simply unreal I think because they only study a small part of world.

of course tall people earn more. Investing in biotech stocks right now is a wonderful way in which to help the middle class, through genetic engenering taller children will be available to folks unable to breed them on their own, it's like biological trickle down, i.e. supply side economics for the genetically challanged.
