Online surveys are becoming a popular way for companies to get feedback from regular people in order to compete effectively in the market place. Whether it is ascertaining consumer trends or getting feedback on a particular type of product, surveys allow them to get the information they need. They desire this information so much that they are willing to pay people to take a survey. More and more people are taking advantage of the ability to participate in online surveys for extra cash, some even have made a decent living doing nothing but surveys for a few hours each day from home. Online focus groups are like surveys except that they take place at a specific time, and participants communicate directly with companies via a chat-like system so they pay even more than surveys. Getting started is easy, there are lots of websites that can provide a list of companies where people can get signed-up for surveys and focus groups, however they often will charge a fee to provide this list. It is possible to find lists of these companies without paying, although this may take a bit more time to locate.

I haven't actually done it myself, but I have seen the website of a company that brought companies needing market research and survey-ers together. I don't remember the link right now though.
Also, I don't think it requires special software to do the surveys, but it might for the focus groups. I would think that the surveys could easily be done by a Linuxer.
I remember one of the survey gateway affiliates did offer some software that was supposed to fill out some of the fields of the surveys that would be common to all of them, like name and such... probably not needed.

Being that I haven't done it, I can't say for sure, but I got the impression that there are plenty of surveys to be done, and that you could make some consistent income. I just don't know how hard you would really have to work to make a living off of it.

Hi, Happy to see you guys here. I am Seefai, doing this business since two months ago, and i just received check from these company last week, it total of USD 3549.66 , i EARn these money only sitting in front of my computer taking survey. It is true, i hope you guys can try.

Apparently, Seefai am earn these money only sitting in front of his computer taking survey.
That's "survey" singular. For two months. One survey, two months, three and a half Gs. I'm not quitting my day job.
Seefai, seem be happy earn these money, however.

I checked out the site he recommended, and it appears that the entire site was written by him, all the money quotes were stated in the same way, (USD 3,500) for example. And the same exact poor english covered the entire site, and in order to join, you needed to pay, so he is obviously trying to sell himself, and just pretending to be a third part "user." Hope i saved someone a lot of trouble, time, and money with this reply.

Hi, i don't mind that you saying these thing to me, i am not english act, so may be my english is poor, but the site is not written by me, but i know the owner when i am inquiry, he help me to solve the problem so, and i really earning these money now, so can i ask you something, you try these paid survey before ? if you never, please do not say things like i am trying to cheap people.YOU BETTER FIND OUT THE TRUTH WHEN YOU SAY SOMETHING ! Hi, i earned this money in about 2 and a half month work, I think i joined not less than 50 focus group and not less than 80 survey. It is not easy to get money, but it is a very good idea earning money just for giving out your opinion online.For your information, i am not recieving one check from one survey company, i recieved check from around 50 companys, amount from $10 to $400.So, please don't think it is from one survey company.Ok?
