My income revealed to a neighbour due to bank's cock-up  Reply with quote

I recently applied for a dollar account with a bank in the UK.

I filled out their form and returned it to them by post. Only I neglected to enclose one or two details so they returned the form.

Problem is they copied my name down wrongly from the form. Furthermore, they also incorrectly copied the address. This meant my completed form was returned to a neighbour who, not recognising the name on the envelope opened it.

Enclosed was my completed form citing all sorts of private financial information such as my salarly. I have complained to the bank in question and got no response. Is there any action I can take?

Thanks

Aaron

Woah, that sucks. Shocked

I'm not familiar with UK law, but this seems like gross mishandling of private (potential) customer information. They were certainly negligent, question is: is this specifically illegal in this question and what measures are afforded under UK or local laws for punishment. If you want to persue it, you should certainly have a little chat with a lawyer.

Maybe Rumpole could try his hand at prosecution, I hear he's quite good.

Yeah, I was pretty mad when I got home (not with the neighbours, of course... they weren't to blame!).

I have contacted http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/ who are in charge of data protection in the UK, to see what they have to say. And contacted the bank once more, asking for the courtesy of a reply to my earlier correspondence... Rolling Eyes
