The passing of a Cold Warrior: Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, November 19th 1926-December 7th 2006

From the editors at Commentary:

Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, champion of liberty and loyal friend of Commentary, died on Thursday, December 7, 2006. We felt sure you'd want to know that, in memory of her life and achievements, we've posted free on our website her famous 1979 essay in Commentary, Dictatorships & Double Standards. This was the essay that led directly to her appointment by Ronald Reagan as United States ambassador to the United Nations, where she fought heroically to defend American and Western values, to safeguard the state of Israel, and to help spread the message of freedom worldwide.

Sincerely,
The Editors

Those born after the fall of the Berlin War and 1989, the year of revolution, may not appreciate the role Jeane Kirkpatrick played in the Cold War from the defection of Gouzenko to Canada in 1946 to 1991 and the fall of the Soviet Communist state in favour of the Russian federation. No doubt, on the Left there will be those who will downplay the late Ambassador Kirkpatrick's role in United Nations with the inauguration of Ronald Reagan to the presidency at a time when the Soviet Empire was still attempting, anyway, to expand. Ambassador Kirkpatrick's ability to stiffen spines in the West was only equalled by Prime Minister Thatcher. Like Reagan, Dr. Kirkpatrick started her life in party politics as a Democrat, and only became a member of the Republican party in 1985. Her notable miscue was on the Argentinian dictator Galtieri's invasion of the Falklands in 1982 -- a position from which she backed down the Reagan administration gave muted moral support to the British position.

By the time I heard her speak in Washington, D.C., in early 2000, she already appeared to be suffering the effects of the heart disease which took her, last week. But the voice was strong, the arguments cogent and incisive, and she, still, brought a presence to the podium. After 9/11, the Cold Warrior shifted her attentions to countering Islamist terrorism.

In her college days, she had been a socialist, but became disappointed with the campus organization which broke up over disagreements about a picnic. Much later at a symposium, here, she had this to say about her brush with socialism, which could apply to the variety of "totalitarianisms" throughout human history:

As I read the utoptian socialists, the scientific socialists, the German Social Democrats and revolutionary socialists -- whatever I could in either English or French -- I came to the conclusion that almost all of them, including my grandfather, were engaged in an effort to change human nature. The more I thought about it, the more I thought this was not likely to be a successful effort.

Scientist: Warming not caused by humans

Thursday, April 19, 2007
By WENDY REEVES

Roy Spencer says we don't know yet how changes are happening

MADISON - Roy Spencer is speaking up about his belief that Earth is not headed toward a global warming disaster.

Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and former NASA scientist, said he knows he's in the minority with his opinions, but he doesn't believe manmade influences are causing catastrophic climate changes.

"We see something change in our climate and we blame ourselves," Spencer told the Republican Women of Madison during a lunch meeting Wednesday.

Spencer contends there is not yet enough known about the Earth's atmosphere to understand exactly what occurs naturally to stabilize the earth's climate.

"I don't think we understand what happens. We can watch it happen on the (climate) models, we know it happens, but we don't know for sure how it happens," Spencer said.

Developing new energy technology is the only way to know for sure, he said, because he believes the existing climate models are too sensitive.

He said everything about the climate is tied to precipitation systems. But the climate models don't consider precipitation efficiency. However, he said the little evidence that exists shows precipitation systems act as a natural thermostat to reduce warming.

"The air you're breathing right now was, in the last few days, part of a precipitation system," he said.

Spencer said the fears about global warming have people wondering whether something should be done now to stop it.

"That's the precautionary principle, and it makes no sense because we don't live our lives that way," Spencer said. "Everything in life has risks and benefits; we could die from eating food."

Energy is needed by humanity, Spencer said while poking fun at Al Gore and other environmentalists who talk about conservation.

"Most of us are already doing what we can to conserve, but it won't have any impact on global warming," Spencer said.

Two weeks ago, he testified in a congressional hearing on global warming. Next month, he'll make presentations at the White House and to top evangelical leaders on his research.

"It's a busy field and keeps me awake," Spencer said.

Vanity Fair cuts 210 jobs at Monroeville plant

5/9/2007, 12:13 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

MONROEVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Vanity Fair Brands will cut 210 jobs from its Monroeville operations, leaving about 700 workers to run them.

The move came three months after clothing manufacturer VF Corp. shed its flagship Vanity Fair underwear line in a $350 million deal with Fruit of the Loom.

Company spokesman Corky Fountain confirmed that corporate officials informed workers on Monday about the cutbacks.

Vanity Fair Brands has a cutting plant, dye plant, distribution center and accounting/administrative offices in Monroeville.

Company officials said the cutting operation will move to an offshore plant over the next year, which will lead to the loss of 210 jobs at Monroeville.

"I think we've all kind of known that the cutting plant — even though it goes against anything I want to hear — would likely be going," said Sandy Smith, director of the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Smith said it's part of a "disturbing trend in the apparel industry to send operations offshore. All the workers here should have wonderful work records to land new opportunities."

Wal-Mart won't let shoplifters serve sentence at Attalla store

THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2007

ATTALLA (AP) — Wal-Mart doesn't want thieves on the premises, even when they're bearing signs admitting their offense.

Attalla City Judge Kenneth Robertson said Wednesday that an attorney for Wal-Mart told him that two convicted shoplifters couldn't finish out their sentences in front of the store, where the judge had ordered them to spend two Saturday afternoons holding signs saying, "I am a thief, I stole from Wal-Mart."

Robertson said the attorney told him that the discount retail giant had safety concerns about the sign-bearing shoplifters outside the Supercenter, where they drew notice last Saturday.

"I think his main concern was the fact that there was so much interest in this there might be some safety issues for the people standing out there, that people might try to run them down or throw something at them," Robertson said.

He planned to have the two hold the signs outside the courthouse downtown from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. But he said he preferred the penalty be served outside the store.

"I told them this takes away the tremendous impact of what we're trying to do," Robertson said.

Robertson said he had long tried to get the store to agree to the punishment, but had been turned down. Then, he said, company officials "told me just out of the blue without me inquiring, saying, 'Go ahead and do it, we think it's a great idea."' But that changed again after the shoplifters actually stood outside.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sharon Weber said the sentence might be an effective deterrent, but the company simply changed its mind.

"Upon further review, we simply would rather the punishment not be carried out on store property," she said.
