Currency conversions  Reply with quote

Hello,

Can someone answer this or send me in the right direction? I recently spent 6 months France and England and my puny dollar took a beating while I was there. Now I am back and went on to ex.com to check the value of the dollar to other currencies and saw some interesting and confusing numbers. Here are conversions to give you an idea (dollars are first)

$1 = .7 Euros
$1 = .5 Pounds
$1 = 107 Japanese Yen
$1 = 3.7 Saudi Arabia Riyals

Now my question is; is there a cost of living variable or some other factor that makes these currencies worth more in there country? Or can I go to Japan and Saudi Arabia and live like a king? ... no pun intended.

Tokyo is the most expensive city in the world right now. You would do alot better in Saudi Arabia, and with the heat there, you wouldn't need to spend much money on clothing (unless u are a woman, of course, since women have to cover up there or get arrested. *LOL*).

Take a look at this Cost of Living Survey from 2004.

Allow me to correct you there. Women don't get arrested for simply not covering their faces in Saudi Arabia. You have many cities where women do not have to wear the head scarf to begin with like in Dhahran, Jeddah, Dammam, etc. Riyadh has more restrictions than other cities since it is the capital.

Besides....

Who told you that you would not need to spend much money on clothing in Saudi Arabia?. Where did you get that information from?

Have a lovely day

I am sorry but your link sends me to the following. I am unable to read your article/report.

Regarding cost of living, I think you made it clear that the hot climate in Saudi Arabia would not make the people over there spend much on clothing and that is what I disagree with. That has nothing to do with the comparison between cost of living in Japan and Saudi Arabia.

I've never seen a tongue-in-cheek comment get into a serious discussion before, its pretty funny.

No I do not disagree that the cost of living in Japan is higher than that in Saudi Arabia. That is not what I disagree with. Go back to my first post and read it again Smile

As far as the veil is concerned, I invite you to read the following verse from the Holy Qur'an which all devout Muslim women believe in so you may know why they wear it in the first place:

"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty, that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof, that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husband's sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hand posses, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye believers ! Turn ye all together towards God, that ye may attain Bliss." (Sura' An-Nur : 31)

There is a big difference between following a religion and following traditional customs that contradict with the religion.

I think the writer needs to make a good note of that.

Big Max Index  Reply with quote

I thought this post was about currency conversions and cost of living in certain places, not cultrual customs.

To help you understand the cost of living, I highly reccomend you check out the Big Mac Index supplied by The Economist
