| Can stock certificates be converted without handing them in? |

I have some stock certificates that have no holes, no markings, no signatures on front or back... basically pristine, with the name of the owner printed on them. Is there any chance at all that these certificates were once converted to book-entry form? Is there any law that says paper certificates must be signed and mailed or handed in to the transfer agent / brokerage in order to be converted to book-entry (electronic) form?
