In simple words, you can say, "Real Estate" refers to immovable property. It includes lands, buildings on it and also includes crops, minerals etc.

More generally, it refers to buildings and housing in general. People are doing real estate business as well, which is quite poplar.

Real estate covers many ventures. Real estate is property that doesn't move and is not portable. It's not shipped or picked up. It's called real because it stays where it is and someone decided that was a good word for it not being movable and the land it's on is an estate. There is a subject in finance called real estate finance. Because real estate is expensive, it's similar to banking and requires a finance disciple to acquire the capitol to invest in real estate, short of being a rock star who happens to wants a 5 million dollar home. Generally a business would need investors to open a small 5 million dollar inn and much more to open a large office building, shopping mall etc.It has nothing to do with selling a house as a sales agent.

There are a lot of replies here, and they are mostly close to correct. Different countries may define Real Estate differently, but in the US Real Estate is the bundle of rights associated with a piece of real property (dirt, buildings etc.). We do not actually own the real property, we own the rights to the real property. Some of the rights may still be held by other parties; for instance it is common to buy real estate that does not include mineral rights, or in a condo situation you may buy the real estate (most of the rights) but may not have the right to rent the property.

It may seem like a minor difference in definition, but when investing it is important to understand that "real property" is not owned by anyone, only the rights to real property are owned. That is why we define the difference between personal and real property. You own your car (its personal property), its yours to do with what you want, with real property you may only own some of the rights, you can not necessarily do anything you want with it. Strangely most people that own real estate do not understand that they don't own the dirt, only the right to use it.
