Financial stability of federal pensions
posted by: johntimber @ Sat Apr 21, 2018 5:26 am
Hi,

There was a recent thread in which the OP sought advice on his AA given that a public sector pension covered all of his routine expenses. Several posters raised the issue of some municipal and state systems not be adequately funded, leading to a need to consider that fact in determining AA as pensions could potentially be reduced or eliminated in the future. That led me, as a military retiree, to again think about my assumptions regarding my pension and the federal pensions of retired civil servants. What do BHs think the potential threa...

Military or Federal Retirement
posted by: johntimber @ Sat Apr 21, 2018 5:24 am
Hi,

I have been following this site off and on for a couple of years now along with the White Coat Investor and wanted to get the input of the members here regarding retirement planning. I'm AD and work in a well-paying medical specialty with a long ADSC remaining (2027). I will be very close (17yrs) to full military retirement, with a strong probability of being selected for O-6 around that time, and eligible for a pretty attractive retention bonus ($270-$300K if similar to today's rates) to extend out to 20-21yrs of service (which would en...

The root of all evil? How money corrupts democracy
posted by: johntimber @ Sat Apr 21, 2018 5:22 am
Hi,

Former Belgian Prime Minister and Secretary General of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance Yves Leterme tells DW what impact money has on politics and how the US differs to Europe. Deutsche Welle: IDEA has a film on the power of money in politics, which will have its European premier at the Global Media Forum. Could you briefly explain what the film is about?
Please help.

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.

Is it politics, money, class, or elitism?
posted by: johntimber @ Sat Apr 21, 2018 5:20 am
Hi,

Is it politics, money, class, elitism, or all of them. Why is it that San Antonio keeps getting snubbed all the time when it comes to construction projects downtown. Our lucky neighbor to the north has just announced that they're getting a new 75 story building, or 78, I don't remember.. I have heard San Antonio referred to as a blue-collar city. Now how many companies want to invest in a city that "others" refer to as a "blue collar" city? I think that we're not quite the "Detroit" of the South, but we're more along the lines of the Fo...

How to secure a home insurance?
posted by: lanceanderson @ Fri Apr 20, 2018 11:46 am
Hey,

There are so many insurance companies in Ontario each offering its own unique coverage. And so, it's really a tough task to compare the offers to select the best and reasonable one. Recently, I bought a new condo nearby Heber Down Conservation Area. Certainly, my home is the most expensive asset I own. Securing a home insurance is crucial to protect it from unforeseen circumstances. The home insurance policy covers loss or damage of personal property due to theft or other unexpected events.

The brokers provide expert, unbiased advice...

California Taxes
posted by: johntimber @ Wed Apr 18, 2018 5:33 am
Hi,

Trying to budget for a month trip to California this September. Can anyone please advise where i could find out about the taxes on purchases? I know that in Hawaii, for example, once you factor in a 20% tip, the state taxes for a motorway system, etc. etc. what started out costing $10 costs an awful lot more!! We dont have tipping in New Zealand and have only one real tax but i suspect once you factor in our exchange rate, this is going to prove to be an expensive exercise which will require careful budgeting. Any suggested resources?

NS&I Bonds v cash in the bank?
posted by: johntimber @ Wed Apr 18, 2018 5:32 am
Hi,

I don't envisage needing to access it but I'm not comfortable putting it somewhere where, should I need to, I cannot. NS&I Issue 56 growth bond pays 2.2% on 3 years, is 100% protected, and I can get at it if I need to with a 90 day interest penalty. Is there any better option?
Please help.

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
