IE8 to Provide Private BrowsingThe latest version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) allows users to leave no Internet footprints behind while surfing the Web. Still in beta testing, InPrivateBrowsing is a new feature which does not record sites in a browser’s history and also prevents the collection of Internet files and cookies. Even though the latest version of Explorer (IE7) and Firefox can block cookies and Internet files but can only delete the history of sites visited after the fact. InPrivateBrowsing will also block third-party content and some ads from appearing. From there, they are able to block companies from collecting their usage data or providing third-party content, unless ... New Functionality in Google Puts More ?M? in Natural SEMGoogle is testing the functionality of allowing users to re-sort search engine rankings by simply moving a result up or down the page. If we assume this data to be used in future approaches to ranking pages based on their relevancy to a keyword, we find ourselves treading into the territory of active learning. This is where a machine learning algorithm offers a human a guessed output or an instance it cannot classify or rank and then internalizes the human response. The algorithm then holds on to the human response, applying these alterations to its future calculations. How might this change Google’s ranking algorithm? By incorporating human responses into Google’s automated opinions on a set of ranking results for a keyword, we make the algorithm itself more multivariate. Ask a person to rank ten similar web pages for a keyword based on its relevance ... Disappearing Search Results Add to Chinese Gymnast ControversyRecent controversy has been swirling over the real age of China’s Gold-Medal gymnast He Kexin, who edged out U.S. gymnast Nastia Liuken for the gold medal in the un-even bars. The youngest age for women to compete in the Olympics is 16-years-old, but several Internet sites, news reports, and even former U.S. womens gymnastics coach Bela Karoli are alleging that Kexin was born in 1994, making her 14-years-old and ineligible to compete in the Beijing games. Although Kexin’s passport indicates that she was born in 1992, speculations about the girl’s real age have fueled an astonishing investigation on world-wide search engines. A blogger known as ‘Stryde Hax,’ began an independent probe into the ages of the Chinese gymnasts by searching for primary state-issued documents. His claim is that once these official documents were made public, he should have been able to easily search and access them on the Internet. ... The Scientific Value of Paid Link SubmissionIn SEO, there is (and will most likely always be) an ongoing debate on the ethics surrounding paid inclusion in web directories. There are a number of fair reservations a company looking into optimization may have regarding this standard practice in the search engine optimization space, but there are also generally very fair replies to these as well. For instance, in many cases, payment is not for inclusion in the directory; it is for express review. Every submitted link is examined by a human and checked for legitimacy. More importantly, the site is evaluated for its relevance to the category to which it was submitted. This human review is valuable and worth compensation in and of itself. In the field of artificial intelligence, the human task of arranging data in a machine-readable manner and ensuring semantic coherence to reduce noise for a learning model is known as knowledge engineering. Knowledge engineering has been an important part of the science ... In terms of daily online activities, search is second only to emailing. Nearly half of users (49 percent) use a search engine to find what they are looking for on a daily basis, according to a study conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project. The number of people who search has grown tremendously since 2002 when it was only 29 percent. Pew surveyed 2,251 adults on their web habits this past April and May for the study. The study also found that 60 percent of users email at least once a day, 39 percent visit a news site daily, and 30 percent check the weather online daily. Interestingly, even with the current rise of social media, only 13 percent of users log onto these sites once a day. Analysts cite accessibility, speed, and relevance of searches as the main catalysts for the growing use of search. Search engine algorithms are more accurate and are providing more relevant ...
